I initially had completely different plans for this week’s music post, but since yesterday temperatures have risen to summer time norms. So instead of a post on my favorite old school house music, I bring to you my summer soundtrack. Which songs make me want to bring out my bikini and lounge on a beach or just dance the night away while the sun is setting in the distance? Keep on reading!

I made one of these lists last year as well, so check out that post by clicking here.

Django Django – Default

A Classic Education – Forever Boy

Mumm-Ra – She’s Got You High

Diplo & Oliver Twizt – Go (Peace Treaty Remix)

Vacationer – Good As New

Alamo Race Track – Lindyhop

Memoryhouse – Walk With Me

Summer Heart – I Wanna Go

Teen Daze – Brooklyn Sunburn

Beirut – Santa Fe

I have been playing this song over and over for the past few weeks. Every single time I hear it I want to burst out in song. I love how it starts all quiet and melancholy and just swells to this amazing song. I managed to find the official video as well as too amazing live performances. One literally on the streets of London and another in some yard of sorts. Both times it’s just him and his guitar. I haven’t decided yet which I like better: the album version of one of these stripped down ones… Which is yours?

Official Video:

On the streets in front of Rough Trade West for Record Store Day:

Outside in some yard of sorts:

What can I say? Boy can sing. And the best part yet: I’ll be seeing him live in June when he hits up Paradiso. Ha! I hope you enjoyed, let me know what you thought in a comment below.

Music time! I have been gathering quite a bit of music as of late and so I thought I’d share my favorites with you. This time it’s a pretty good mix of different styles I think. There’s some rock, some indie, some dance, some chill out, a bit of everything really. I hope you enjoy! Leave a comment below and tell me about your favorites.

1.) Summer Heart – Come with me

This song makes me want the sun to start shining for real.

2.) Tender Forever – You have the woods

A bit dark and mysterious, but I love the droning drums in the background.

3.) Maps & Atlases – Winter

Now for a more cheerful vibe. I went to see these guys in concert a few weeks ago and it was surprisingly fun! It’s this folky, poppy, indie music which is unexpectedly danceable too. Sometimes cheap concerts (I paid 8 euros for the ticket) are the most fun ones because you have no expectations. If you get a chance to see them: please do so.

4.) Red Alder – Supernova

Dreamy indie pop with a hint of melancholy. I listen to this to take my mind off of things before I go to bed. It’s so relaxing!

5.) Magic Wands – Warrior (The XX Remix)

I found this song in my list titled as Black Magic, but I couldn’t find the song under that title. I did find a song called Warriors and found that this is the actual song. So I’m renamed the title. It’s a remix done by The XX. I love their minimalistic music. If you liked The XX original stuff, you will like this too. You can download the song for free here.

6.) Ricky Eat Acid – Only Girl

I’m still digging repetitive sample music such as this.

7.) Miles Kane – First of my Kind

A bit of rock to shake you awake after that slow tune. It’s Artic Monkeys (he’s part of it) with Oasis on Don’t Look Back to Anger meets The Verve (the latter not musically, but style and video wise). This is going to be part of the soundtrack to my summer.

8.) Simian Mobile Disco – Cerulean

Simian Mobile Disco is releasing a new record soon (or already did so by now). Some track have already been leaking. This is my favorite one so far.

9.) Swanky Tunes & Hard Rock Sofa vs. Basement Jaxx – I Wanna Be Your Dog vs. Where’s Your Head At

Swanky Tunes & Hard Rock Sofa vs. Basement Jaxx – I Wanna Be Your Dog vs. Where’s Your Head At

Let’s have some more dance music shall we? Dirty house mixed in with The Stooges’ I wanna be your dog AND Basement Jaxx’s Where’s your head at? It doesn’t get much better than this! You have to click the link though, couldn’t find it anywhere else. I originally found this on a remix EP by Afrojack.

10.) Peace Treaty Vs ESOT Vs Jay-Z & Kanye West – Heard You Were Walking In Paris (Hardwell MAKJ Bootleg)

Another dance mash up. Hardwell + Kanye, Jay-Z and some other wacked out dance tunes make for an awesome track.

What are your current favorite songs?

I love listening to music while I’m on the go, but some music just makes for a better travel companion than others. This post is on my top picks of songs that make me want to hit up highways in a car with an open top. It just makes me wish that I actually had a car, lol.

Rascal Flatts – Fast Cars and Freedom

This song just makes we want to hop into car and drive along desert roads of the old Route 66. It just does.

Rod Stewart – I Know I’m Losing You

I love the gritty feel of this song. It has a great build up and a great solo to top it off as well.

LeAnn Rimes – Can’t Fight the Moonlight

THE I’m-hanging-out-with-my-girls and I’m singing at the top of my lungs type song.

Deanna Carter – Strawberry Wine

Ah something a bit more romantic. Ultimate summer love song and it’s country. Country music has always made for the best road trip music.

Robbie Williams – Me and My Monkey

Because it is about a road tip. To Vegas. With a Monkey. Nuff said.

America – Ventura Highway

I just love how laid back this song is and the harmonies are great too. It reminds me of watching sunsets while drinking beers and just having a laid back evening.

Canned Heat – On the Road Again

Another classic song! I guess this has to be the ultimate road trip song ever.

Johnny Cash – Further on Up the Road

I can’t remember whether I’ve posted this before, but this song is too brilliant not to post another time. Originally by Bruce ‘The Boss’ Springsteen, but I love this version so much better. Johnny Cash is also a must have for any road trip.

Bobby Blue Bland – Farther Up the Road

Apart from country, I guess blues makes a good second as road trip music. This oldie by Bobby Blue Bland is perfect, just don’t get confused thinking it’s the same song as the one above it. It’s not!

King Curtis – Memphis Soul Stew

This may not be blues, but it definitely gets you going and keeps you going and it makes you hungry if you’re not careful. Other for more road, for more music, or for actual food.

What are your ultimate road trip songs?

A few weeks ago, Janske posted a blog where she had randomly posted 10 songs. These 10 songs had been picked by her Ipod while on shuffle and she got quite a few songs that she actually didn’t listen to much at this moment. Currently, I am working my way through the 2888 songs on my phone in alphabetical order. I only listen to music on my phone when I’m on the go and the project has been going on for a little over a month now and I am about 1/3 of the way in. The reason why is because I just want to hear ALL the songs on there at least once. I felt as if I was hearing too many of the same songs as shuffle functions tend to ‘remember’ what was played, making a loop of recurring songs. At home though I still deliver myself to the good will of my shuffle function and here’s the result.

1. Architecture in Helsinki – Escapee

Cheerful indie pop song.

2. Fabian – Dreams to Wishes

This is what I would call an indie dance song.

3. The Gossip – Heavy Cross

What can I say: Beth Ditto for the win! New York punk rock with some pop vibes.

4. Tocotronic – Im Zweifel für den Zweifel

German singer/ songwriter song with the coolest lyrics ever.

5. TV on the Radio – I was a Lover

One of my favorite TV on the Radio songs!

6. Painted Palms – All of Us

Another cheerful indie song.

7. Locas in Love – Bushaltestelle (The Bus Stop Song)

German indie pop. I literally have a handful of German songs in this playlist and my shuffle decides to pick two! Pfff. Love this song though. You can listen to the song here.

8. Mountain Man – Soft Skin

Harmonizing folky female singers. Sort of an a capella vibe. Pretty.

9. The Police – I can’t stand losing you

My fave band when I was 18. Used to listen to them all the time. This is one of my favorites by them.

10. Curtis Mayfield – Move on Up

Ah. Classic R&B. The kind I like best. This makes me want to watch Soul Train videos. Oh and have cocktails. On a beach. Period.

I actually quite like the stuff my shuffle came up with. It nicely reflects my main taste in music: a bit of pop, lots of indie, some oldies with a vibe of rock and dance infused with folk, old loves and new stuff. These songs aren’t necessarily my most played songs or most listened to artists at the moment, but I think that overall this reflects what I like listening to on a daily basis.

I have used my short playlist to do this. This is the playlist I listen to most. It is 1263 songs long at the moment. I also have a full playlist with all MP3s I have (comprising of over 11000 songs), but I think I will save that for another day. That would definitely give an even worse mixture of songs.

Which 10 songs come up when you shuffle your playlist?

Recently I have been planning a bunch of concerts again. I haven’t been going much in the past year or so as I didn’t really have the time or because nothing fun was coming my way. Now, however, I have found a bunch of cool concerts to go to and I would like to share with you which these are.

30/03 Memoryhouse @ Paradiso

This dreamy indie pop group is not very well known to me. I only know a handful of songs. In my experience though, those sometimes make the best concerts. At only 10 euros for a ticket I could not pass up going. Here is their song To the Lighthouse

And the remix by Millionyoung:

23/04 Maps & Atlases @ Paradiso

Another indie group that I actually only know by name. I have heard their song Solid Ground only once. When coming across them I did do a quick search and found this newer song called Winter which I really like.

02/05 Band of Skulls @ Paradiso

This band I actually really like. I have their first album Baby Darling Doll Face Honey and have had their song Death by Diamonds and Pearls in my playlist since I first found the song 2 years ago. They were also featured on the Twilight New Moon Soundtrack and I even contemplated buying a ticket to their show when they played Amsterdam before. It was never meant to be. Now they are back with a new single, a new album and a new tour. I’m really curious! Here is the first single of their second album, Bruises:

17/05 Perfume Genius @ Amstelkerk

Another band I don’t know much about. I only know that the few songs I know, I love dearly. I already featured one of their songs in a previous post and am just curious to see how this dreamy music will come across live. They play Amsterdam as part of the Indiestad festival. Here is one of their newer songs called All Waters:

29/05 White Denim @ Melkweg

White Denim is a band that has been on my radar for some time. I have their album Fits, and have a bunch of their songs that float around my playlist. Their sound cannot be pinned down to one specific genre. It is sort of rocky, jazzy, groovy all at the same time. Here’s one of my favorite song by them called Home Together:

14/06 Marcus Foster @ Paradiso

This young singer/songwriter played Crossing Border in November and all I read were rave reviews. Some said he was even the best performance of that festival. I already have his album and love a bunch of his songs. He’s friends with Bobby Long, whose concert I went to in October. So I cannot wait to hear this guy live. Here’s the main single from his album called I Was Broken:

29/06 James Vincent McMorrow @ Melkweg

Finally! I finally managed to get hold of a ticket to see James Vincent McMorrow. He made one of my favorite albums of 2011, which I finally got my hands on in London, and I already blogged about him too. I’m most stoked about this one! This is my current favorite song from his album Early in the Morning called Down the Burning Ropes:

I will also be seeing Radiohead in October, but I will post about that later. I hope to be able to write reviews on all these concerts if they are interesting enough. I won’t be taking vids or pictures at every concert either. Just whenever I feel like I should. Some artists I’m curious to see as I’ve been listening to them for a while, others have just recently popped onto my radar. At least I’ve got something to do the next couple of months.

Which concerts will you be attending in the coming months?

Today I would like to talk music again. I know I’ve said this before, but what usually happens to me is that I will be listening to a song for a while and then suddenly I’ll hear a song by the same band, like it too and end up looking into more stuff. That is why some bands float around my music collection for a while until I actually start listening to their music properly. This was exactly the case with Bravestation. A Canadian band which doesn’t even have a wiki page, let alone many views on youtube. Yet, I think this tribal indie rock band should be on many more people’s radar.

Source: http://bravestation.tumblr.com/

Tribal indie rock band? I hear you think. Yes, that’s probably the closes description of their sound as it sounds like rock music with a good dose of tribal elements to it. It’s difficult to describe so why don’t you just have a listen for yourself:

White Wolves Official Music Video:

This remix of the same song by Teen Daze is also pretty rad:

The first song I heard: Colour Us With Youth

There is no album out yet, but there’s an EP from 2010 as well as a new single. Both can be downloaded at the band’s bandcamp website and the best part: it’s all free! Click the links below to download the goodness.

I’ve been obsessed with Colour Us With Youth for a few weeks now and the more it I hear the more I like it. The same goes for all of their music. Now all they have to do is come to Holland and perform a show here. They’ll at least have one person cheering them on.

What music have you just recently been obsessing about?

On March 13th one of the largest music festivals in the world, SXSW, started again. As a musician it’s an honor to play there and many artists get picked up by record companies and the like. It is a very versatile festival with not only indie artists, but also some hip hop and dance oriented people. It has a bit of everything, though most of it is slightly indie/ folky/ blues/ rock oriented. The best thing though is that, even though I can’t go there, Spinner.com has a bunch of songs up by artists who play SXSW that you can download for free from their website. I find it a super easy resource for getting my hands on new music. Here’s the current list.

You can download the songs by going to Spinner’s download page by clicking here. I have indicated songs & artists that I already know/ like. Those songs are in bold. Songs that I’m curious about are in italics. The full list:

The songs in italics and thus the ones I am curious about were picked mainly on vague reference or just the name of the band/ song. I tend to always pay attention to what bands and songs are called as that usually gives you a pretty good indication of what it will be like.

What songs are you curious about?

Don’t you just love songs that make you happy? You know the ones that just put a smile on your face? Yep, those are the ones I’m talking about. The song that currently does this for me is Don McLean’s American Pie.

I know that this song is about death and an by gone era of when music was actually good. The referral to the death of Buddy Holly as the day music died to me isn’t actually a negative per se. Yes the song is about those never returning anymore and that no matter how hard we try music will never be as good again, but there is also this ring to it of hope. Hope that as long as we keep trying to make things better, even though it is futile, that that is what will keep us going.

Now this song has a many interpretations as there are people, but the reason why this song makes me smile in the first place is because it is so catchy! I love the way the song is built up: starting slow, then picking up, only to slow down again to pick right back up. The chorus is super easy to remember and has a great hook that will have you singing along in seconds. So for me, it’s not necessarily the meaning of the song, but it’s the music and the overall vibe of the song. Because really: although this song is about death, it still carries a very happy tune.

What would your interpretation be of this song? To help you I posted the lyrics underneath.

A long long time ago
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they’d be happy for a while
But February made me shiver
With every paper I’d deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn’t take one more step
I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died

So bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this’ll be the day that I die
This’ll be the day that I die

Did you write the book of love
And do you have faith in God above
If the Bible tells you so?
Now do you believe in rock and roll?
Can music save your mortal soul?
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?
Well, I know that you’re in love with him
’cause I saw you dancing in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues
I was a lonely teenage broncin’ buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died
I started singing

Bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this’ll be the day that I die
This’ll be the day that I die

Now, for ten years we’ve been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rolling stone
But that’s not how it used to be
When the Jester sang for the king and queen
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
And a voice that came from you and me
Oh and while the king was looking down
The Jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned
And while Lenin read a book on Marx
The quartet practiced in the park
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died
We were singing

Bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this’ll be the day that I die
This’ll be the day that I die

Helter skelter in a summer swelter
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter
Eight miles high and falling fast
Landed foul on the grass
The players tried for a forward pass
With the Jester on the sidelines in a cast
Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While sergeants played a marching tune
We all got up to dance
Oh, but we never got the chance
‘Cause the players tried to take the field
The marching band refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?
We started singing

Bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this’ll be the day that I die
This’ll be the day that I die

Oh, and there we were all in one place
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again
So come on Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
‘Cause fire is the devil’s only friend
And as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel born in hell
Could break that Satan’s spell
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite
I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day the music died
He was singing

Bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this’ll be the day that I die
This’ll be the day that I die

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
I went down to the sacred store
Where I’d heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn’t play
And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died
And they were singing

Bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this’ll be the day that I die
This’ll be the day that I die
they were singing

Bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this’ll be the day that I die

Just the other day I realized how I have a few songs by The Joy Formidable floating around some of my playlists and then I noticed how I like every single one of those songs. That is why I would like to introduce you to: The Joy Formidable.

Source

The Joy Formidable are by no means a new band. I have heard their name buzzing around for a while and they were featured on last year’s SXSW festival. Their biggest claim to fame so far: a track on the Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 1 soundtrack. It is easily my favorite song on that entire soundtrack and then I figured out that I liked many more of their songs.

The Joy Formidable – End Tapes:

They released their first album The Big Roar last year in 2011 and if I have to describe their sound it’s somewhere between indierock with a dose of pop, catchy lyrics and some dark and dreamy qualities to it. I have especially been enjoying a song called Cradle in the Fang Island Remix which goes like this:

The Joy Formidable – Cradle (Fang Island Remix):

Two other songs I like are Whirring and Austere:

By now I am very curious to hear their first album and maybe I will pick it up when I’m in London next week. I like the catchy lyrics and overall vibe of the songs listed in this post so I’m thinking I will dig the album too.

What do you think of The Joy Formidable?
